In 1997, Peter Neubäcker began developing the idea behind Melodyne and in October 2000, together with his wife, Prof. Dr. Hildegard Sourgens, and the software developer and Technical Director, Carsten Gehle, founded Celemony Software GmbH, which is based in Munich. Melodyne was presented for the first time in 2001, at the Winter NAMM Show, and has won numerous international prizes both for its innovative approach and for its fantastic sound quality.
Melodyne Studio - Polyphonic Magic |
![]() |
|||
| Melodyne studio is the largest member of the Melodyne family. With this most powerful version you are no longer limited to the editing of monophonic melodies, but you can also handle complex textures and even polyphonic material, such as chords or song mixes!* Furthermore, Melodyne studio is a complete audio multi-tracker with an unlimited number of tracks and a high resolution of up to 32 bit and 192 kHz. | ||||
|
Recording artists and engineers have known about Melodyne for years. For a long time, though, it was only monophonic vocal and instrumental parts that could benefit from Melodyne’s much-admired editing algorithms: algorithms capable of everything from minor corrections of intonation to extreme pitch shifting and from the subtle modification of grooves to drastic time stretching. Melodyne studio 3 introduces this magic to full chords and complex audio signals as well; so now harmonic material (such as rhythm guitar or piano parts) can be transposed (without altering the tempo), slowed down or sped up (without altering the pitch) and even quantized.* What’s more, all this can be done in real time with the highest sound quality for which Melodyne is famous. You might already know pitch shifting and time stretching from other programs, yet with Melodyne, even extreme alterations still sound natural and convincing. Although Melodyne studio is the perfect tool for correcting timing and intonation of audio recordings, it is also far more than just that. It is a full multi-track application which allows for complete song productions and creative arrangements. Melodyne studio offers you an unlimited number of audio tracks – depending on your computer system. |

However, if you prefer to record in your familiar recording software (eg. Cubase, ProTools, Logic, Sonar and more), Melodyne Studio supports a full integration, too. You have two options to link both applications: the ReWire protocol and Celemony's MelodyneBridge. For most production scenarios the MelodyneBridge is far more convenient to work with than a ReWire connection.
Melodyne studio 3 can read sample libraries created using Melodyne technology such as those of Ueberschall’s Liquid Instruments (from version 3.0) or the Melodyne Sound Libraries (from version 3.1), thereby obtaining access to an almost inexhaustible supply of licks and phrases. Even if you are familiar with previous versions of Melodyne, you might want to consider an update to Melodyne studio 3 to benefit from the automatic and reliable note recognition or the Correct Pitch and Quantize Time macros, which allow the most common flaws in vocal and instrumental recordings to be removed with a few mouse clicks. With the Melody Manager you can comfortably browse audio files on your hard disk. “With Melodyne3, the note-based rearrangement and remixing of songs are child’s play,” says Peter Neubäcker, the founder and mastermind of Celemony. “And we’ve streamlined the workflow in numerous ways in response to requests from users. As a result, Melodyne is far simpler and more practice-oriented than ever before.”

Melodyne Cre8 - 8-track arrangements |
![]() |
| If you would like to edit multiple tracks at the same time or create a polyphonic arrangement from a single voice, but you can dispense with the comprehensive possibilities of Melodyne studio, then Melodyne cre8 is the software of your choice. | |
|
Just as the big Melodyne Studio, Melodyne cre8 is a multitrack program. Up to eight audio tracks can be recorded and edited (unlimited number of tracks in Melodyne studio). Although you cannot handle polyphonic recordings or complete songs in cre8 (only possible in Melodyne studio), the high quality Melodyne algorithms and macros are available nevertheless: from minor corrections of intonation to extreme pitch shifting and from the subtle modification of grooves to drastic time stretching. Melodyne cre8 is ideal for creating a complete choir arrangement from a single lead vocal. Just copy the vocal to the other tracks, select a key and move the additional voices in pitch. Melodyne cre8 will automatically adjust the new tracks to the correct key and give you authentic sounding backing voices within a few minutes – if you wish even with slight deviations in pitch, rhythm and colour to make them sound even more realistic. In the same way you can create a string quartet from a solo violin or you let your brass section sound a little fatter. The possibilities are endless! Of course you can use Melodyne cre8 – like the other versions of Melodyne – to correct and refine little successful recording performances, too. For this you don't need to run cre8 as a standalone program, but you can connect to your familiar recording software (eg. Cubase, ProTools, Logic, Sonar and more) via ReWire or the MelodyneBridge. Melodyne cre8 can read sample libraries created using Melodyne technology such as those of Ueberschall’s Liquid Instruments (from version 3.0) or the Melodyne Sound Libraries (from version 3.1), thereby obtaining access to an almost inexhaustible supply of licks and phrases. Even if you are familiar with previous versions of Melodyne cre8, you might want to consider an update to version 3 to benefit from the automatic and reliable note recognition or the Correct Pitch and Quantize Time macros, which allow the most common flaws in vocal and instrumental recordings to be removed with a few mouse clicks. With the Melody Manager you can comfortably browse audio files on your hard disk. |

Melodyne editor
|
Melodyne editor is designed for the editing of individual instrumental recordings such as vocals, guitar, saxophone or piano, but good results can also be obtained with more complex material such as string quartets. If two instruments sound the same note at the same time, Melodyne editor offers one note for editing. The user can alter the pitch, position and duration of the note detected, make it louder or quieter, copy or cut it and paste it in some other position, and so on. Adjustments can also be made to the formant register, vibrato and drift of the notes as well as any pitch, volume or formant transitions. Special copying functions also allow the transfer of selected attributes from one note to another.
Whilst in terms of intuitive access, musicality and sound quality Melodyne editor is in the finest Celemony tradition, its technical foundations are completely new. The new software base offers among other things optimized multi-threading that fully exploits the advantages of modern multicore processors. In addition, it allows many improvements in plug-in operation including freely selectable window size, the monitoring of pitch editing, scrubbing, and ‘Edit Play’ (playback not tied to the host).
“Our first product with DNA was intended to be an update to Melodyne plugin 2,” says Carsten Gehle, Technical Director of Celemony Software GmbH. “Since, however, we have ended up developing a new product around DNA, with new technology and fully new application possibilities, and one that furthermore can also be used as a stand-alone application, we decided to give it a new name. 'Melodyne editor' sums it up nicely: a Melodyne editing environment for individual tracks.”
When it appears in the spring of 2009, Melodyne editor will replace former Melodyne plugin. Melodyne editor when released will also form part of the Melodyne studio bundle. Naturally, even after the name change, the update options already announced for existing users of Melodyne plugin will still be valid.
